Inquiry Logs
Listening
"Imagine that you enter a parlor. You come late. When you arrive, others have long preceded you, and they are engaged in a heated discussion, a discussion too heated for them to pause and tell you exactly what it is about. [...] You listen for a while" (Burke).
In groups, you established at least two questions that you would be exploring as part of your participation in your inquiry group's discourse community. As Burke notes, however, we are first tasked with listening. So, right now, I am asking you to get your inquiry feet wet by doing just that: listening in on the conversations that relate to your individual inquiry questions.
As of now, there are no restrictions as to how you go about finding forums to "listen." You might visit a website devoted in some way to your line of questioning, you might visit blog forums, you might work within the "Google Scholar" search engine, or you might take another avenue still.
Take your time to really get an idea of what people are saying and where there is conflict. As you partake in listening, in multiple forums/venues, keep in mind that you will need to include the following in your first Inquiry Log post:
-
You will need to report back your findings on WordPress, posting this in the Inquiry category, and including the link to your post in the forum below.
-
In your report, you will need to:
-
Include you inquiry questions,
-
Capture the complexity of the conversation as you see it unfolding, and you will need to include links to your resources,
-
Include what, in your process of listening, you feel that you would like to know more about, as it relates to your inquiry questions.
